Villa di Capezzana

The estate

Records of vines and olive groves at Capezzana date back to a lease document from 804 AD, making this one of the longest continuously documented wine estates in Tuscany. The Contini Bonacossi family bought the property in the 1920s and have run it for five generations since.

Carmignano has a long, unusual history of blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, a practice on this estate that predates the grape's fame elsewhere in Tuscany. When Carmignano was granted DOC status in 1975 it became the first Tuscan appellation to formally include Cabernet.

Alongside the Sangiovese-Cabernet reds, the estate is equally known for its Vin Santo, made in a dedicated vinsantaia and aged for years in small chestnut and oak barrels.
